What is tooth protectors?

Tooth protectors, also known as mouthguards or dental guards, are protective devices used to cover and protect the teeth during high impact physical activities such as sports and martial arts.

They act as a cushion to absorb and distribute the force of any blows or impacts to the mouth and jaw, which can help prevent or reduce the severity of dental injuries such as chipped or knocked-out teeth, as well as jaw fractures and concussions.

There are different types of tooth protectors available, including stock mouthguards, which are pre-formed and can be bought over-the-counter in sporting goods stores, and boil-and-bite mouthguards, which are made from a thermoplastic material that softens in hot water and can be molded to fit the individual's teeth.

Custom-fit mouthguards are also available, which are designed and fabricated by a dentist to fit the specific contours of the individual's mouth. These offer the best protection and comfort, but are usually more expensive than other types.

It is recommended to wear a tooth protector during any high-impact physical activity, even if it is not considered a contact sport, to prevent dental injuries.
